Iron Mountain Mine Superfund Site Update
2023-03-09 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm PST
FreeThe Iron Mountain Superfund Site Update and Shasta Environmental Alliance Public Meeting
Redding Public Library – Community Room
Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 6 pm
The Iron Mountain Mine northwest of Redding and above Keswick Lake was once one of the worst point sources of water pollution in the United States. It regularly polluted the Sacramento River with toxic chemicals until it was established as a Superfund Site by the EPA in 1983. It has the world’s most acidic water, -3.8 on the scientific scale of acidity.
It is not an understatement to say the Iron Mountain Mine Superfund Site is a unique place in the world that attracts scientific interest globally and it is located in our backyard.
Tom Wallis, a representative of the United States Environmental Protection Agency will give a presentation that touches upon the mine’s rich cultural history during mining, the post-mining environmental contamination released from the mine, and the nationally recognized successful remediation of that contamination that has, and continues, to protect the Sacramento River.
Join Shasta Environmental Alliance at a public meeting at the Redding Library Community Room on March 9 at 6 pm. SEA will also give updates on the work we are doing.
