Hornbeck Trail Walk with BLM Ecologist

May 11 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am PDT

Hornbeck Trail Walk with BLM Ecologist
Saturday, May 11th, 2024 at 9am

SEA has organized a field trip to be led by BLM Ecologist Brooke Thompson on the Hornbeck Trail north of Redding to talk about the proposed fire treatment planned for the area. Brooke will explain the ecology of the area, how it has been affected by fire suppression, and alternatives in preserving the area and making it safer from catastrophic fire. The vegetation was also adversely affected by pollutants from the copper smelters that were operating in the late 1800s and early 20th century near where Shasta Dam is now located.

We will also identify native plants and non-native plants on this field trip. Brooke also wants to hear input from you, the public, about their alternatives. This trail is in a mixed oak woodland and chaparral habitat.

Brooke has led several field trips for SEA before and has a passion for the natural world and always leads an informative walk. This will be a fairly easy walk of 2 to 3 miles and will take about 2 hours. Meet at the trailhead which is under the powerlines on Quartz Hill Road between Lake Blvd. and Keswick Dam Road. Please sign up on our Meetup page and sign the waiver if you haven’t already.

For more information contact David Ledger at david@ecoshasta.org. For those wishing, after the field trip we will take a short drive to the Quartz Hill Mine.
